This is how dangerous poor intimate hygiene is

What fungi and bacteria can do to your best piece if you don’t take care of it regularly. Plus: How to prevent smegma.

If it smells cheesy when you push back your foreskin, then every lovemaking session is over. To prevent this from happening to you, but also to avoid endangering the health of your best piece, you should know the following facts about smegma and how to prevent it in the future.

What is smegma actually?

The word “smegma” is Greek and translates to something like “soap” or “ointment.” While that doesn’t answer the actual question, it does outline what it’s all about quite accurately. In fact, smegma is an ointment-like, pale yellow sticky mass that forms between the foreskin and glans in every man and should be removed regularly using soap. The cheesy substance consists of sebaceous secretions, dead skin cells, urine and sperm residue.

Why does smegma form?

The formation is completely normal and even protects the sensitive skin of the glans. However, if hygiene is poor, the smegma becomes clearly visible and releases an extremely foul-smelling odor when the foreskin is pulled back, which quickly kills any desire a sexual partner may have – especially for oral sex.

Do women also have smegma?

Yes, the cheesy mass is not a male-only problem. Smegma is also visible in women who do not take care of their intimate hygiene. The secretion develops between the outer and inner labia and the clitoris. Therefore, women should also pay attention to sufficient intimate hygiene. Especially because women are prone to vaginal infections anyway – but usually because of too much, rather than too little hygiene. However, because women are made much more aware of intimate hygiene through advertising, smegma is less of an issue for them.

Can smegma make people ill?

Yes. The substance is an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. They can lead to inflammation of the penis and urethra. The inflammations can increase the risk of cancer, known as penile carcinoma. If there is a viral infection due to any HP viruses in the smegma, the female partner can also become infected. The unpleasant smell and the unattractive appearance should therefore not be the only reasons for daily intimate hygiene – after all, in extreme cases it can save your health and the relationship.

Intimate hygiene: how to prevent smegma?

The most important rule first: You have to do it every day! To do this, pull back the foreskin as far as possible – preferably in the shower. When cleaning, pay special attention to the area between the foreskin and the glans. You can use a washcloth and lukewarm water, which cleans better than cold water. If smegma is already present, water alone is usually not enough. Then you should also use a skin-friendly cleanser or baby shampoo to protect the skin’s natural acid mantle. Every man should also know these tips for proper penis care.

How do I get rid of smegma quickly?

By cleaning your best piece regularly as described above. If it does not disappear despite daily washing and itching is added, it is probably due to too strongly perfumed shower gel. In that case, you should say goodbye to your masculine, tartly scented cleansing products for a while and opt for ph-neutral products that protect the skin’s natural acid mantle. Mild baby shampoos or shower oils low in additives (e.g. from Basis pH) are ideal.

What problems can incorrect intimate care cause?

Smegma can become a problem, for example, in the case of foreskin constriction, so-called phimosis. Then it is not easy to remove the smegma thoroughly and fungi and bacteria can cause inflammation of the glans or the inner foreskin. In case of a slight constriction, the foreskin can be stretched with ointments containing steroids. Under certain circumstances, however, only surgical removal of the foreskin can help. In this case, you should ask your doctor for a consultation.

Do circumcised men have less smegma?

A cicumcision, as circumcision is called in technical language, usually prevents the formation of smegma, which is why viral infections are said to occur less frequently. Nevertheless, even a circumcised penis must be submerged in warm water every day.

Your health, well-being and love life will benefit from regular intimate hygiene. The best thing is to integrate it into your life like brushing your teeth every day.
